Jane Campion, regizoarea filmului, a facut istorie, devenind prima femeie care a primit mai mult de o nominalizare pentru cea mai buna regie (ea a mai fost nominalizata pentru filmul The Piano, din 1993).
Si Steven Spielberg (si el nominalizat pentru cel mai bun regizor) a setat un nou record. Ca producator al filmului West Side Stories, care a primit un total de sapte nominalizari, Spielberg a produs 11 filme nominalizate la categoria cel mai bun film, un nou record pentru premiile Oscar.
Denzel Washington si-a extins recordul pe care-l detinea deja – actorul de culoare cu cele mai multe nominalizari, obtinand in acest an a zecea nominalizare pentru rolul sau din The Tragedy of Macbeth.
